Cafe Capers is a blog about the building and re-opening of a cafe following a fire which destroyed the kitchen and bathrooms causing the business to close the week before Christmas 2011.  You can learn more about us at www.hetetgallery.co.nz

Our journey began on Saturday 17 Dec at 4am when we awoke to the news that a fire was blazing in the cafe building that our family owns. We live in homes around the cafe so were on the scene pretty much immediately.

Thanks to my brother-in-law who stood on a ladder holding a hose to the flames until the Firemen arrived and of course thanks to the Firemen who put out the fire - the damage sustained was limited to the kitchen and toilets.

All you cafe owners and potential cafe owners out there beware: The fire started in the clothes dryer. The tea-towels, although washed, still had fat in them (you can never get rid of all the fat) which combusted with the heat of the dryer.

The week before Christmas was fully booked - the poor customers had to find somewhere else for their end of year dos. People were genuinely gutted that the cafe closed. I even had a text from a complete stranger saying so.Kind.

The previous cafe owners (who leased the building from us) were not insured for business (another warning for anyone in business) and they decided to cut their losses, take their stuff and leave.

So, here we are full of enthusiasm to set up a cafe but with no idea of how to run one. . . . hmmm . . . . How hard can it be?

I know nothing about running a cafe.  .. . . so I am picking that this is going to be some ride!
